There’s an entirely extraordinary world awaiting you at our very own Elmhurst Public Library. And believe it or not, we’re not talking about the extraordinary world of reading. No – we’re talking about the Library of Extraordinary Things. Many library patrons and Elmhurst residents are unaware of the many items they can check out from the library.

Here’s a list of just a very few of the many, many items you can borrow (lists are not comprehensive – just a sampling!).

Adventures. No need to buy a membership to the zoo or museum. Our library has passes you can check out! Visit the website to find out which museums and other attractions are available. Check with the library for availability as there are limited passes for each location.

  • Brookfield Zoo
  • Cantigny Park
  • Chicago Botanic Garden
  • Illinois Railway Museum
  • Legoland Discovery Center
  • Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art
  • Naper Settlement

Culinary Cupboard. You really have to check this out (pun intended!) to get a feel for the very large number and variety of kitchen items available.

  • Food dehydrator
  • Vacuum sealing system
  • Instant pot
  • Pasta maker
  • Tortilla press
  • Cookie press

Tech. Before you invest in expensive tech or pay for something you need for just one use, borrow from the library. You won’t believe the many tech items you can borrow – even WiFi hotspots!

  • Projectors
  • VHS to DVD Converters
  • Microphones
  • Cables and converters
  • Cameras and photography accessories, including backdrops
  • Access to Lynda.com
  • Assistive Technology iPads
  • WiFi hotspots
  • Chargers

Creativity. These are just a few of the items you can check out. We’re not even getting into the Makery in this post, although you should get into it soon if you like to create. We’re talking 3D printers, button makers, soldering equipment, t-shirt makers, embroidering and engraving machines, and so much more!

  • Sewing machine
  • Knitting needles and crochet hooks
  • Instruments: keyboards and drums

Efficiency investigation. Before you hire an expensive efficiency expert, consider checking out one of these tools.

  • Black + Decker Thermal Leak Detector
  • Kill A Watt energy efficiency checker

Play. This winter break, check out a new game or library kit to keep the kids busy when they’re out of school. When your child tells you they played Exploding Kittens at their friends house and want to buy it, borrow it from the library first and see how often it gets played.

  • Board games and puzzles
  • Kits for all sorts of things from Makey-Makey to putting on a play
  • Toys, including doll strollers, stuffed animals and puppets
  • Playaway LaunchPad, pre-loaded iPads and E-readers

Whether you’re looking for games to play with relatives this winter holiday season, cooking appliances you want to try before you buy, or tech you want to play around with, our very own Elmhurst Public Library’s Library of Extraordinary Things is full of the unexpected. Be sure to check it out today!
